      Moran Woodwind Quintet Performance

The Moran Woodwind Quintet will perform a recital of two quintet standards and two newer works in the quintet repertoire on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 7:30 p.m. in Westbrook Recital Hall on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus. The concert opens with the most famous quintet by the father of the woodwind quintet, Anton Reicha, who wrote 24 such works. Concluding the program is Hindemith’s celebrated Kleine Kammermusik, one of the all-time standards in the repertoire. Also, on the program are La Nouvelle Orléans by film composer Lalo Schifrin, whose Mission: Impossible theme is world famous. Rounding out the program is a delightful work by Katherine Murdock, titled Postcards from the Center. Murdock was a professor at Wichita State University, and all five short movements are inspired by Kansas postcards. One of the most active and visible quintets in the Midwest, the Moran Woodwind Quintet is the resident faculty woodwind quintet of the Glenn Korff School of Music. Formed in 1986 and named for the late John Moran, director of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln School of Music, the Quintet has toured extensively. The Quintet has recorded three CDs for Crystal Records, including two CDs featuring the music of the early 20th-century German composer Theodor Blumer and one with American woodwind quintets (music of Heiden, Higdon, Murdock, and Lieuwen). The Quintet has also recorded on the Coronet label. Members: Nathan Koch, bassoon; Diane Barger, clarinet; John Bailey, flute; Alan Mattingly, horn; William McMullen, oboe Free and open to the public.
